Winter Furnace Issues to Watch for This Year.

The winter months are, hands down, the most stressful time of year on your furnace. Of course, this is true in any colder area, but Wisconsin winters can be particularly brutal. The last thing you want is a cataclysmic failure deep into the frigid winter. However, a bit of diligence can go a long way towards keeping your unexpected costs and personal stress levels as low as possible. By keeping your eyes peeled for the following common winter furnace issues, you can hopefully arrange for professional heating service inspection before they become serious issues.

  • Dirty Filters – Can’t remember the last time you changed your furnace filter? Debris forced through your system adds stress and impedes airflow, dramatically increasing overall wear and tear. Set recurring reminders to change those filters. Be sure you’re going into the peak usage season with a clean slate of filters.
  • Shake, Rattle and Roll – If it sounds like your furnace is throwing a party with all that rattling, clanking and booming, it’s important to break that party up quickly by calling a professional. Loud noises can indicate issues your heating service pro can decode. While not all sounds indicate a dangerous safety risk, it’s always better to be safe than sorry by having the issue investigated thoroughly.
  • Uneven Heating – Some rooms too warm for comfort while others feel a bit chilly? After you’ve ruled out drafty windows and doors, make sure all the vents are open. If the problem persists, it’s a good sign your system is actually underpowered for your home. In these cases, your best call is to a professional heating service to determine a more appropriate model.
  • Cold Air Incoming – If you’re feeling nothing but a cold breeze through the vents, don’t immediately panic. If filters are clean and the thermostat hasn’t been inadvertently lowered, a handful of issues could be to blame. The trouble could be as simple as the pilot light going out or a dirty flame sensor. Unless you’re absolutely confident relighting it, a professional should address the pilot light.
